How to Read and Write Baybayin Letters

Baybayin is an abugida writing system, meaning each consonant letter carries an inherent /a/ vowel. To change the vowel sound, you add small marks called kudlit:

ba
Default /a/ vowel
ᜊᜒ
bi / be
Kudlit above (ᜒ)
ᜊᜓ
bu / bo
Kudlit below (ᜓ)

The virama sign is placed below a consonant to cancel the inherent vowel. For example:

ᜊᜆ
bata
(child)
ᜊᜆ᜔
bat
(why)
